Paid maternity leave is long overdue in the United States. Virtually every other developed modern economy offers paid maternity leave. About 21% of U.S. employers offer paid maternity leave to all of its employees. Opponents of mandatory paid maternity leave typically cite to additional costs incurred by the employer. It is true that paid maternity leave would create an additional cost to the employer. But, this short term cost has to be weighed against the longer term benefits the employer receives. The employer gains goodwill among its workforce; an advantage in recruiting new employees; increase in employee productivity, dedication and loyalty. These benefits translate into better productivity and efficiencies which in turn have a positive effect on the employer's bottom line.
