The wage gap persists even after narrowing it down to specific occupations. For example, in retail sales, women earn 70 cents to the dollar. Here is another example. 70% of the elementary and middle school teachers are women. Yet, the women teachers earn about 87 cents to the male teacher's dollar. Male teachers earn a median of $1,096 a week whereas women earn $956.
The wage gap exists irrespective of level of education. There is a 7% wage gap between male and female college grads a year after graduation, even when factoring in college majors, occupation, age and geographical location according to a study by the American Association of University Women.
The wage gap gets considerably worse for minority women. African-American women make 64 cents and Hispanic women make 56 cents for every dollar earned by a white male.
It gets worse. Not only is the gender gap not improving, it is actually growing in certain job sectors of our economy. For tech jobs, a female in a tech director role earns $40,000 less per year (yes, that is 40k, not 4k) than a man with the same exact job title.
